SAVANNAH, Georgia — The winner of the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in Savannah beat the event's record by eight minutes.

The Savannah Morning News reports (http://bit.ly/1uMKJ7T ) 25-year-old Nathan Hilton of Flagstaff, Arizona, finished with an official time of 2:21:31. The previous record was set in 2011.

Tara Martine of Wilimington, North Carolina, was the first woman to cross the finish line with an official time of 2:59:12.

More than 17,000 runners were registered for the 26.2-mile race that winds through downtown Savannah's oak-shaded squares as well as sites off the beaten path for most tourists.

American Idol alumnus Phillip Phillips was booked to headline the marathon's concert celebration after the race.

For those who don't get in enough running during the marathon and half-marathon Saturday, sponsors are holding 5K and 1-mile races Sunday.
