PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island — Rhode Island Republicans won't be running a candidate for state House speaker and will back Democrat Nicholas Mattiello's bid for re-election to the post.

House Minority Leader Brian Newberry of North Smithfield told The Providence Journal (http://bit.ly/1xDmt6z ) on Friday that Republicans will vote for Mattiello as a "token of good will."

Newberry says the GOP wants to give Mattiello a chance to honor a commitment he made last spring to work more cooperatively with the Republican minority.

The 75-member House of Representatives will convene Tuesday with 63 Democrats, 11 Republicans and one independent.

Mattiello rose to House speaker from majority leader last year after then-Speaker Gordon Fox resigned following raids on his home and Statehouse office by federal and state authorities. Few details about the raids have been released.
