INDIANAPOLIS — The consumer review service Angie's List has laid off 97 members of its sales force.

The Indianapolis Star reports ( ) that Chief Operating Officer Mark Howell said in a written statement Friday that the business decision was extremely difficult to make but the Indianapolis-based Angie's List still is a sound business. He says it is part of a plan to improve sales productivity and performance.

The subscriber service that provides online access to business ratings and reviews reported a second-quarter loss of $18.4 million on July 23 amid rising expenses.
