MINNEAPOLIS — Denver scored two goals in less than three minutes of the first period and coasted to a 5-1 win over No. 1-ranked North Dakota Saturday in the third-place game at the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Frozen Faceoff.
Trailing 1-0, Josiah Didier and Quentin Shore scored 2:43 apart to put the Pioneers (23-13-2) ahead for good.
Matt Tabrum, Nick Neville and Emil Romig also tallied goals for Denver, which outshot North Dakota 35-26. The Pioneers took 20 shots on goal in the first period.
Pioneers goalie Tanner Jaillet made 25 saves.
North Dakota (27-9-3), which was outscored 8-2 in two games, had not lost back-to-back games in 71 games.
It took a 1-0 lead on Connor Gaarder's goal in the first period.
North Dakota's Zane McIntyre made 30 saves.
