VICTORVILLE, California — A Southern California woman who fed chili powder to her boyfriend's toddler has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

The Daily Press of Victorville ( ) says Amanda Sorensen entered the plea Monday in the death of the 2-year-old girl last year at an Apple Valley home.

Joileen Garcia had a seizure and died at a hospital.

Prosecutors originally charged Sorensen with first-degree murder and assault on a child, but she reached a plea deal.

Sorensen's attorney, David Sanders, says his 23-year-old client was trying to discipline the child and had no idea that it would kill her. He says Sorensen's boyfriend used to discipline his children by placing hot sauce in their mouths.

Sorensen faces 15 years to life in prison.
