FORT WAYNE, Indiana — An Indiana state senator who was deployed to Afghanistan for eight months as a member of the Navy Reserve is back in Indiana.

Republican Sen. Jim Banks of Columbia City returned to Indiana on Tuesday, arriving at Fort Wayne International Airport. His wife, Amanda, who won a caucus meeting to fill his seat during his deployment, was there to welcome him.

While away, Sen. President Pro Tem David Long appointed Banks chairman of the Veterans' Affairs Committee. Banks told WANE-TV (http://bit.ly/1DhtlXH ) he is looking forward to working on issues involving veterans.

Amanda Banks will work in the Legislature for another week. Senator Banks still has a couple weeks of leave left and expects to be back to work sometime after the legislative session.
