LAFAYETTE, Indiana — GE Aviation expects to start production as planned in January at its new jet engine manufacturing plant in Lafayette.

Plant manager Eric Matteson says construction is complete on the factory and equipment will be installed during the coming months.

Matteson tells the Journal & Courier ( ) that he and 20 other employees spent much of the past six months at a GE factory in North Carolina for training on the new LEAP engine that the company touts as being more fuel efficient.

GE officials announced in March 2014 plans for the $100 million factory in a Lafayette industrial park. The company said it anticipated having 200 workers by 2018.

Matteson says the hiring of more workers over the next three years will be tied to production demands.
