WALKILL, New York — A 55-year-old man and his 8-year-old granddaughter are recovering from bite wounds suffered when the man's pit bull attacked them inside his upstate New York home.

The Times Herald-Record of Middletown reports (http://bit.ly/1rAoEXD ) that retired corrections officer told police in the Orange County town of Wallkill that he and his wife were sitting on a bed with their granddaughter on Sunday while she petted the couple's 3-year-old dog.

Gardner says the dog suddenly bit the girl's face, then attacked him repeatedly. Gardner and the dog fought for several minutes while his wife called 911.

Police arrived and eventually used a stun gun, a shield and a catch pole to restrain the dog. Police say the dog died during the struggle.

Gardner suffered bite wounds to both arms and his left leg.
