US stocks slip following drops in Europe and Asia; DreamWorks Animation soars on deal talk

NEW YORK — U.S. stocks are slightly lower in midday trading after recovering most of an early slide.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 58 points, or 0.3 percent, to 17,054 as of noon Eastern time Monday. The Dow had been down as much as 178 points earlier.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 16 points, or 0.8 percent, to 1,966. The Nasdaq composite fell 40 points, or 0.9 percent, to 4,471.

Asian markets closed mostly lower as investors fretted over the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, where the main Hang Seng index fell 1.9 percent

DreamWorks Animation soared 18 percent as media reports suggest the animation studio is in discussions with SoftBank about a possible deal.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.48 percent.
