MARRERO, Louisiana — The state Fire Marshal's office says an 80-year-old man died trying to put out a fire at his house.

Deputy Chief Brant Thompson says a used extinguisher was near the body of Edward Wicker.

He says Wicker's wife told investigators she smelled smoke, opened the laundry room and flames shot from the dryer Monday night. Wicker told her to call 911 and move their car to make room for firefighters.

His body was in the kitchen.

Fire Marshall Butch Browning says every home should have at least one working fire extinguisher, but they're for small fires. He says fires double in size every 30 seconds, so people should just leave fires bigger than a frying pan.

He says the causes of the fire and of Wicker's death are being investigated.
