HENDERSONVILLE, North Carolina — Police in Hendersonville say one officer has been stabbed and his partner shot and killed the suspect.

Police say two officers responded to a sexual assault call at a downtown apartment late Sunday afternoon.

Police Chief Herbert Blake said Sgt. Kenny Hipps was stabbed in the abdomen between his bullet-proof vest and his gun belt.

"The blade was probably as long as your pen," Blake said, pointing to a reporter's pen that was 5-and-a-half inches long.

A K-9 officer with Hipps then shot the suspect. Adrian Eugene King, 46, died after being shot.

Hipps was treated at Pardee Hospital in Hendersonville and then transferred to Mission Hospital in Asheville. Blake says Hipps is expected to recover.

The other officer was not hurt.

The State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the shooting, a normal procedure when an officer is involved.

Henderson County sheriff's deputies and Laurel Park police assisted in the investigation.

Hipps was named officer of the year last year in Hendersonville.
