A storm that was originally expected to give parts of Maine a dusting has moved closer to shore, bringing nearly a foot of snow to parts of the state and closing hundreds of schools and businesses.

The National Weather Service says Down East Maine could see the greatest amounts.

Meteorologist Mal Walker in Caribou says Maine's eastern tip could see up to 11 inches. Forecasters say the York County coast to the south could see up to 8 inches of snow.

The storm was originally thought to be a problem only for Massachusetts but officials say the storm path tracked farther northward. Many schools were closed Friday as a result.
