INDIANAPOLIS — The son of a slain Indianapolis police officer is suing the city, alleging his mother's death was the result of negligence.

Officer Kimberlee Carmack was killed by her ex-husband, Sgt. Ryan Anders, in an April murder-suicide. RTV6 ( ) reports a federal lawsuit recently filed by her son, Dustin, claims the police department failed to protect Carmack. It says the officers who were assigned to watch over Carmack disarmed her and left her defenseless.

The lawsuit says the officers removed a video surveillance system from her property and didn't put her in a safe house.

Both Carmack and Anders were on administrative leave when he broke into her home, shot her and turned the gun on himself.

The city's voicemail was not accepting messages after office hours Monday evening.
