PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island — Eight beaches in Rhode Island have been closed to swimming after health officials detected high levels of bacteria.
The state's Department of Health announced Thursday that it was urging people not to swim at Barrington Town Beach in Barrington, Easton's Beach in Newport, Goddard Memorial State Park Beach in Warwick, Peabody's Beach in Middletown, Scarborough State Beach (North and South) in Narragansett, Third Beach in Middletown and Warren Town Beach in Warren.
Conimicut Point Beach in Warwick remains closed to swimming.
Health officials say they'll reopen the beaches when bacterial counts drop to safe levels.
The state regularly monitors water quality at beaches throughout the summer months and closes beaches found to have high levels of bacteria.
