WILMINGTON, North Carolina — A Wilmington man has been found not guilty by reason of insanity in the stabbing death of his father two years ago.

The New Hanover County District Attorney's office tells local media outlets that a Superior Court judge has found 22-year-old Corey Eugene Roberts not guilty of first degree murder. The ruling follows a three-day competency hearing last month.

Roberts had been charged in the May, 2013, stabbing death of his father, 52-year-old Chris Eugene Roberts.

Authorities said the stabbing followed an argument between the men.

Mental health experts testified at the hearing that Corey Roberts suffered from a diagnosed mental illness at the time although prosecutors contended he acted out of anger.

The defendant will be held at Central Regional Hospital in Butner.
