PITTSBURGH — A Pittsburgh Veterans Affairs hospital is reporting a new case of Legionnaire's disease.
A VA spokesman says in a release that on Friday a patient with pneumonia tested positive at its University Drive emergency room. The VA says the unidentified man also received outpatient treatment at that location within the last two weeks. That is the incubation period for legionella.
The VA said all water tests have been negative but retesting is underway. The VA has also offered to test the facility where the veteran lives.
At least six Pittsburgh VA patients died of Legionnaire's disease and others were sickened between February 2011 and November 2012, prompting Congressional hearings. Investigators found that the patients contracted it due to water treatment problems at the Pittsburgh hospitals.
