INDIANAPOLIS — The leader of Indiana's Senate says he hopes the U.S. Supreme Court takes up the issue of gay marriage bans quickly to clear up "chaos and uncertainty" created by federal court rulings on the issue.

But the top Democrat in the House says it's time to move on.

Senate President Pro Tem David Long says he isn't surprised that the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a federal judge's ruling declaring Indiana's ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional. But he says he still believes the issue should be decided state by state.

House Democratic Leader Scott Pelath of Michigan City says the decision underscores the need for lawmakers to move on to other issues.
