PONTIAC, Michigan — Authorities have charged a 21-year-old man in a shooting that killed his girlfriend and hurt her 2-year-old daughter during an argument at a suburban Detroit home.

Akiva McCray of Waterford Township was arraigned Thursday in Pontiac's 50th District Court on open murder, assault and firearm possession charges. Bond was denied and he's being held in the Oakland County Jail.

It wasn't immediately clear if McCray has an attorney.

Police say 32-year-old Kenyetta Barnes was arguing with McCray Tuesday in a bedroom when he pulled out a handgun and opened fire. They say 2-year-old Ahmiyah was standing next to her mother and suffered a leg wound.

The woman's 11-year-old son, 13-year-old daughter and 18-year-old brother were in the Pontiac home's living room and not injured. Police say they aren't McCray's children.
