AUGUSTA, Maine — Officials are urging Mainers to check their boats to prevent the spread of invasive plants and animals.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection says that Maine boaters should remove plants and animals from their boat before and after they take their craft into the water.

Agency officials say that no new bodies of water in Maine were reported having invasive aquatic plants last year or early this year and one lake was taken off the infested list.

But there are still 24 known infestations of invasive species in the state, particularly in southern and western Maine.

Commissioner Patricia Aho says infestations can be costly to the state and can reduce property values.
