MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — A West Virginia University alumnus and his wife have donated $1 million to his alma mater.

The donation is from South Charleston natives J. Wayne and Kathy Richards. J. Wayne Richards is president and CEO of GR Energy Services, a Houston-based oilfield products and services company.

The gift will support travel, research and technology enhancements for new faculty members in WVU's Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources. It will provide flexible funds to allow the college to hire, retain and reward faculty members who have not yet achieved tenure. It will be awarded for a period of three years and is renewable if the recipient shows progress toward being granted tenure.

Statler College dean Gene Cilento says the gift is the first of its kind at WVU.
