NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Police Department says two people have been shot along a Mardi Gras parade route in uptown.

Police spokesman Frank Robertson, who was at the scene Thursday, says there was an altercation just before 10 p.m. during which a person produced a firearm and shot two people.

Robertson says one victim was struck in the neck and the other in the chest. He says both are in critical condition at a local hospital.

Police said one suspect is in custody. No further details were immediately available.

The shooting occurred during the Muses parade — the traditional kickoff to the Carnival weekend.

Local media report police barriers were set up at the scene but the parade rolled on.

The city will host several parades daily until Mardi Gras, which is Tuesday.
