TRAVERSE CITY, Michigan — Longtime newspaper executive Paul Heidbreder has joined the Traverse City Record-Eagle as its new publisher.

Heidbreder said Wednesday (http://bit.ly/1L2hFz4 ) that he believes the Record-Eagle is vital to the region, where a "good, strong, vibrant newspaper" is key.

Heidbreder is a former advertising manager and publisher in Michigan, Maine, Illinois, Indiana and Iowa. He has been involved in the news business since before his professional career started, since his parents owned the weekly Blissfield Advance in southeastern Michigan.

The Western Michigan University graduate most recently served as publisher of the Ames Tribune in Ames, Iowa. Before that, he was publisher and regional manager for GateHouse Media in Adrian.
