AMITE, Louisiana — Tangipahoa Parish school administrators have amended the district's uniform policies to allow students to wear shorts. The move comes after a recent outcry from parents about sending their children to school amid the intense summer heat.

Effective immediately, Superintendent Mark Kolwe said in a news release late Monday all students will be allowed to wear "khaki or navy, twill, loose-fitting walking shorts, if the bottom of the garment is knee-length."

Previously, only students in prekindergarten through sixth grade could wear shorts.

The Advocate reports (http://bit.ly/1JrJL6G) classes start Aug. 6.
