AUSTIN, Texas — A Central Texas police officer has fatally shot an armed man who allegedly aimed a gun at officers responding to a domestic disturbance call.

Austin police did not immediately release the name of the man who died early Friday.

Police Chief Art Acevedo (ah-suh-VAY'-doh) says a woman called 911 to say her husband was suicidal and also wanted to kill her. The dispatcher heard a scream and the phone dropped.

Officers minutes later located the man driving a pickup truck and threw down road spikes to deflate the tires. Acevedo says the man exited the truck and pointed a revolver at police. An officer opened fire.

The police chief says the suspect did not shoot. No officers were hurt.

The officer has been put on paid administrative leave.
