South Carolina mothers meet in Orangeburg to bring attention to issue of infant mortality

ORANGEBURG, South Carolina — Women from an Orangeburg maternal and infant health program are holding their seventh Infant Mortality Luncheon.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports ( ) that Friday's event is being sponsored by the Low Country Healthy Start program.

The luncheon is being held at noon at the Edisto Fort United Methodist Church Family Life Center.

The speaker is Kyle Greene, a community activist and Columbia resident who is sharing his story of growing up in rural Jasper County and overcoming early childhood challenges.

In 2012, South Carolina's infant mortality rate was 7.6 per 1,000 births. That year, there were 435 babies in South Carolina who did not live to see their first birthday.
