SPOKANE VALLEY, Washington — A fire official says a Spokane Valley man who tried to extinguish the flames on his balcony with a fire extinguisher suffered minor burns and had to abandon the effort and call firefighters.

The Spokesman-Review reports (http://is.gd/bAZoHM ) that the man's neighbors had already called the fire department Wednesday afternoon.

Fire Capt. Jeff Bordwell says at least one propane tank blew up.

The man's third floor apartment was destroyed and several others were damaged.

Bordwell says the man's cat suffered from smoke inhalation but firefighters revived it and rescued a second cat from another apartment.

Damage is estimated at $100,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
