BUTTE, Montana — A 56-year-old man was accidentally shot and critically injured by a 13-year-old hunting companion who was unloading a gun.

Butte-Silver Bow County Sheriff Ed Lester tells the Montana Standard ( ) that the victim was shot in the abdomen just before 10:30 a.m. Sunday. He and three or four others were hunting in the Brown's Gulch area north of Butte.

Lester says the others in the hunting party got him on an all-terrain vehicle and met the ambulance at the highway. The man underwent surgery and was listed in critical condition early Sunday evening at St. James Healthcare in Butte.

General rifle hunting season for elk and deer opened on Saturday.
