NOGALES, Arizona — Federal authorities say one person is in custody and nearly 235 pounds of marijuana seized after U.S. Border Patrol agents discovered a cross-border tunnel in southern Arizona.
Agents working with Mexican law enforcement discovered the incomplete water-filled tunnel about 100 yards west of the DeConcini Port of Entry in Nogales.
Once drained, agents saw the tunnel extended 42 feet into the United States and was equipped with electrical wiring and ventilation pipes.
Agents also found sugar sacks that were used to carry excess dirt and also several tools.
Authorities say one person was arrested while trying to smuggle 10 bundles of marijuana worth an estimated $117,000 through the tunnel.
The person's name and nationality wasn't immediately released Monday.
