LUMBERTON, Mississippi — A locomotive and nine cars of a northbound Norfolk Southern freight train derailed Wednesday near Lumberton.

The cause of the accident, which happened between 3:30 a.m. and 4 a.m., is under investigation.

Lamar County Emergency Director James Smith says eight of the nine cars that left the track were empty, while the other was hauling automobiles.

Smith says the train was not carrying any hazardous materials.

Sheriff Danny Rigel says the engineer was slightly injured when the locomotive left the track and turned on its side in a swampy area. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital.

Officials say removal of the locomotive and cars and repairs to the track is expected to take from 36 to 48 hours.
