LAWRENCEVILLE, Georgia — Gwinnett County police say a man has been charged in the death of his 2-year-old son, who died from a lethal amount of oxycodone in his system.

Police Cpl. Edwin Ritter said Friday that 34-year-old Kurt Vanpool has been charged with one count of felony murder and one count of cruelty to children in the 2nd degree in the April death of his son, Hunter Vanpool.

Ritter says the charges are based on the negligence of Vanpool using the drug in an area where the child could ingest it.

WSB Radio (http://bit.ly/1sgwf8M ) reports Vanpool made his first court appearance on Friday and was ordered held without bond. WSB Radio also reports Vanpool was appointed an attorney and told the judge he wanted to take a polygraph.
