ELIZABETH, New Jersey — A northern New Jersey man who brutally attacked a Plainfield police officer has been sentenced to 16 years in state prison.
Andre Henderson will have to serve about 14 years before he becomes eligible for parole under the sentence imposed Wednesday. He was convicted last October on an aggravated assault charge.
Union County prosecutors say the officer, Israel Valentin, was about to mail a letter when Henderson attacked him without warning. He hit Valentin in the head, knocking him to the ground, then kicked him and stomped on his head.
A passer-by stopped the attack by striking Henderson with his daughter's softball bat.
Valentin suffered five broken ribs and a brain bleed and spent several days in the hospital. He returned to duty and remains on the force.
