PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island — The girlfriend of a woman fatally shot in Providence in December has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge.

Following her arraignment Tuesday, Sendra J. Beauregard remained held without bail in the death of 50-year-old Pamela R. Donahue. The Providence Journal reports ( ) she was ordered to undergo a mental competency exam.

The 42-year-old Beauregard was charged with murder and discharge of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence resulting in death. Beauregard is accused of shooting Donahue, who was found unresponsive by her roommate in their apartment Dec. 2.

Police initially believed Donahue had overdosed, but emergency medical technicians found a gunshot wound after the 50-year-old Donahue was taken to the hospital.

Police say Donahue's roommate told investigators the couple had recently argued.
