PARIS — Marseille beat Lille 2-1 Sunday to ensure it ended the year top of Ligue 1.

An own goal from Lille forward Nolan Roux and Michy Batshuayi's strike — shortly after Idrissa Gueye's equalizer — saw Marseille head into the winter break three points clear of Paris Saint-Germain, which drew 0-0 against Montpellier on Saturday.

Lyon could move a point above PSG with a win at Bordeaux in the evening match.

Also later, fourth-place Saint Etienne hosts relegation-threatened Evian.

There was a festive atmosphere at the Stade Velodrome, with hundreds of fans wearing santa hats.

Marseille dominated but struggled to carve out clear opportunities. It broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute when an awful mistake by Roux saw him turn Florian Thauvin's corner into his own net.

Lille rallied in the second half and its hard work paid off shortly after the hour mark following a swift counter attack.

Djibril Sidibe controlled Michael Frey 's cross with his back to goal before playing it across to Gueye, who fired it into the bottom far corner.

However, Marseille restored its advantage eight minutes later when Thauvin played a one-two with Andre-Pierre Gignac before crossing for Batshuayi to control and drive a swivelling shot under the crossbar.
