Rust College to receive marker on the Mississippi Freedom Trail

HOLLY SPRINGS, Mississippi — The role of Rust College and its students during the Civil Rights era will be remembered Thursday with a marker on the Mississippi Freedom Trail.

The event is at 4 p.m. on Rust Avenue across from the main entrance to the Rust College campus. In Holly Springs.

The marker will recognize the activities of its students during the 1960s, which included boycotting the segregated Holly Theater and assisting with voter registration in the region.

Leslie Burl McLemore, chairman of Mississippi Freedom Trail Task Force, will speak at the unveiling.

Rust College is a private four-year, liberal arts college. It is the oldest of the 11 historically black colleges related to the United Methodist Church, the second oldest private college in Mississippi and the oldest historically black college in the state.
