PHOENIX — A fatal collision closed part of a major Phoenix traffic artery during the Friday morning commute.
Eastbound lanes of Grand Avenue between 35th and 43rd avenues have reopened but westbound lanes remained closed.
Police say a car rear-ended a pickup traveling northwesterly on Grand Avenue with enough force that the truck careened into a power pole, knocking out electricity service to the area.
The pickup's driver is dead.
Police Sgt. Vince Lewis says speed was a factor in the crash. He says investigators are checking whether there was driver impairment.
The accident occurred shortly before 2 a.m.
