GAINESVILLE, Georgia — Authorities say a pregnant woman has been killed as she tried to cross a highway in northeast Georgia.

The Times reports (http://bit.ly/1k89837) that the woman was struck by a vehicle around 9:30 p.m. Sunday as she tried to cross the southbound lanes of Georgia 365 near Mud Creek Road in northeastern Hall County. Her name wasn't immediately released.

Authorities say the driver tried to swerve to avoid hitting the woman, but struck her with the front of the car.

Georgia State Patrol Trooper Jonathan Munger described the street as a rural county road with no street lights or stop lights.

After the accident, officials discovered the woman was pregnant.
