RICHMOND, Virginia — A nonprofit group's plan to build a free-standing children's hospital in the Richmond area has been put on hold.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch ( ) reports that Virginia Children's Hospital Alliance CEO Katherine Busser announced the decision on Monday during a City Council work session.

Busser told the council that her group decided to take a step back and see if there is another way to put the project together.

In May, both VCU Health System and Bon Secours Richmond Health System decided that they wouldn't participate in the project. Each had concluded that the hospital wasn't financially feasible.

Busser said the alliance's board recently voted to eliminate its paid staff, including her. But she said the alliance will continue to advocate for a children's hospital.
