OPELIKA, Alabama — Opelika police say a 17-year-old boy is charged with murder in a teenage boy's shooting death.

Police Capt. Shane Healy says 17-year-old Alizah Ellis, a student at Opelika High School, was fatally shot Monday and the teen who was arrested is being held on $150,000 bond in the Lee County Detention Facility.

The Associated Press typically doesn't identify juvenile crime suspects. Healy says the teenage suspect was expecting to start his senior year at Opelika High School.

Authorities say Ellis was shot in his chest Monday afternoon and died while in surgery at the East Alabama Medical Center.

Healy says the teens knew each other, but police haven't disclosed details on the circumstances that may have led up to the shooting.
