LYNWOOD, California — A man suspected of wounding a Los Angeles County sheriff's detective was shot to death Tuesday after he came out of an apartment with a gun in his hand, authorities said.
The man, whose name wasn't immediately disclosed, died at the scene.
Two detectives were investigating a case in the Los Angeles suburb of Lynwood when someone opened fire on them, authorities said.
The pair returned fire and one detective was shot in the shoulder area, sheriff's Sgt. Pauline Panis said.
He was hospitalized in stable condition and expected to survive, she said.
The gunman then holed up in an apartment building for more than three hours, authorities said. A nearby elementary school was briefly locked down.
Dozens of deputies and a SWAT team were called. A robot ram was used to knock down an apartment door.
There was no immediate word on what prompted the first shooting.
