BAMBERG, South Carolina — A 73-year-old Bamberg woman and her two dogs have died in a Christmas morning house fire.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reports (http://bit.ly/1t8WS1d ) that Faith Lapp died about 3 a.m. Thursday after being transported to an Orangeburg hospital. Her grandson was treated for burns.

A boarder at Lapp's home was able to escape. Glenn Fort told the newspaper he awoke to heavy smoke after hearing Lapp's grandson call his name.

Fort says Lapp's two dogs were in her bedroom with her — a Shih Tzu named Chewie and a long-haired Chihuahua named Lil' Bit.

Lapp's youngest son, Leonard Brown, described his mother as a "big-hearted woman."

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
