SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Police Department says an officer injured during a shootout in May was hit by a shot fired by another officer, or friendly fire.

Officer Heather Seddon was struck in the neck May 17 during a firefight with Dennis Fiel. Fiel died in the conflict.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports ( ) that an investigation by the department's homicide unit found the shot that struck Seddon came from a police weapon. The homicide unit investigates all officer-involved shootings.

Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman says the bullet could have been a ricochet during the firefight, but that could not be fully proven.

The fact that Seddon was hit by friendly fire surfaced in court papers filed Friday by Lt. Natalie Stone, who is suing the department.

Officials say Seddon has returned to work.
