DETROIT — Detroit officials say the efforts of public safety workers and volunteers paid off in limiting arson during the three-day Halloween period.

Mayor Mike Duggan and others said Saturday that the city had 97 reported fires between Wednesday and Friday. It was the fourth year in a row that the Angels' Night period had fewer than 100 fires.

Of this year's reported fires, officials said fewer than half — or 43 — were deemed suspicious.

The campaign is a long-running response to what used to be known as Devil's Night, the day before Halloween.

In 1984, Detroit had more than 800 fires during the period. Last year, 95 were reported.
