MUSKEGON, Michigan — Authorities in western Michigan have filed a murder charge against a 13-year-old boy they say fatally beat his 16-month-old cousin after the girl's mother left them home alone.
The boy was taken into custody Thursday and is charged with an open count of murder in the February death of A'Laina Brown at the girl's home in Muskegon Township. The Associated Press isn't naming him because of his age.
A police report said the teen "admits to shoving her and she fell backwards and hit her head. He further admits that he kicked her in the abdomen very hard, causing her to fall backwards to the floor and striking her in the forehead with his hand hard enough to sting his hand," according to The Muskegon Chronicle.
Muskegon Township police Chief Ken Sanford said when the boy was brought in for questioning, he demonstrated the fatal kick in an interview room.
"In demonstrating to police how hard he kicked the child, he managed to knock a clock off a wall," Sanford said.
An autopsy said she had multiple external injuries and severe internal injuries and died of blunt force trauma.
Authorities have filed a neglect complaint against Octavia Jones for being absent when her daughter was attacked. They're also seeking to take her 7-year-old son from her.
According to police, Jones came home before dawn Feb. 28 and found A'Laina on cushions on the floor in front of the couch, wrapped in a blanket. Jones said she picked up her daughter and discovered she was cold to the touch and called 911, according to police.
