GREAT FALLS, Montana — A family walking along the banks of the Smith River in Cascade County found a human skull about 19 miles south of Ulm.

Sheriff Bob Edwards says the condition of the skull and its remaining teeth gave officials reason to believe it was old. No trauma was visible and no other bones were found where the skull was located on Monday evening.

Edwards says it's possible the Smith River exposed an old grave.

The case is still being investigated.
