SALT LAKE CITY — Utah police have released video footage recorded when an off-duty officer fatally shot a man who they say pulled a knife during a drug arrest Wednesday.

The video played during a press conference Friday shows an initially calm interaction that started when West Valley City police detective Jason Vincent spotted a man slumped over in a car.

Draper Police Chief Bryan Roberts says police found heroin on 34-year-old Jeffrey Nielson of Sandy and were handcuffing him when he broke free, ran back to his car and pulled a large kitchen knife.

Roberts says the camera worn by a backup Draper officer was knocked off during the struggle and the final, fatal seconds of the encounter were recorded on audio but not video.

Roberts says it shows police acted professionally.
