BEIRUT — Syrian activists say two explosions have struck near a school in the central city of Homs, causing casualties, including among children.

Rami Abdurrahman of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory says the explosions occurred in a government-controlled area dominated by minority Alawities, a Shiite offshoot sect that President Bashar Assad also belongs to.

Abdurrahman says children were also among the casualties but he did not have an immediate death toll. He says the first explosion was a car bomb but that it was not immediately clear what caused the second blast.

State media also reported the blasts outside the school but didn't provide further details.

There was no claim of responsibility. Syrian rebels have carried out such car bombings during the country's civil war, now in its fourth year.
