TERRE HAUTE, Indiana — Demolition has started on two 15-story former residence halls at Indiana State University.

The Tribune Star reports (http://bit.ly/1FPYgO2 ) a 7,000-pound wrecking ball slammed into one of the Statesman Towers on Monday. Bringing down the 160-foot tall towers has been under discussion for more than a decade.

Andy Licht of Renascent, the company hired to tear down the towers, said it will take until about mid-October to complete the project, including putting in sidewalks and greenspace. The demolition will cost $1.9 million, with the entire project's cost estimated around $3.1 million, which is less than what was initially predicted.

It could take two months to bring down each tower, Licht said. Work to demolish the west tower is expected to start by mid-June.

The company is using a crane and wrecking ball. Licht said much of the building's metal will be recycled. Concrete will be crushed and put into the towers' basement area.

Indiana State University capital planning and improvements director Bryan Duncan said Monday afternoon that crews had made more progress than he thought they would.

"It's a major undertaking," Duncan said.

Members of the local media and others watched the demolition get underway. Frank Mann, who was watching the work while on his lunch break, said that towers would be missed in Terre Haute.

"I wish they would have kept them," Mann said.

The Statesman Towers were built in the 1960s as residence halls and later were converted to academic classrooms for the colleges of education and business.
