AIKEN, South Carolina — The Aiken County coroner says a 62-year-old Aiken man appears to have killed his wife before turning the gun on himself.

Coroner Tim Carlton says a preliminary investigation shows James Tomac shot and killed his 44-year-old wife Teresa, then himself, around 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

Carlton says a family member called 911 after talking with Tomac. Deputies and a New Ellenton police officer who responded found the couple dead. Both worked for the U.S. Department of Energy.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
