WALNUT CREEK, California — Police say a homemade gun was used in an apparent murder-suicide at a Bay Area home last month.

The Contra Costa Times reports (http://bayareane.ws/1IqJVJH ) investigators say 21-year-old Scott Bertics, a former engineering student, built the gun used to kill 19-year-old Clare Orton.

Gun control supporters say these "ghost guns" circumvent laws on background checks, while others say a person can't build a gun without the firing mechanism, which requires a criminal background check and gun registration to purchase.

The lower receiver in the homemade weapon lacked a serial number, but Walnut Creek police would not confirm whether the firing mechanism was obtained illegally.

Contra Costa Deputy District Attorney Barry Grove says potential criminals are more likely to steal a gun than built it.
