BEAUFORT, South Carolina — A Hilton Head Island man will serve 30 years in prison in the shooting death of an 8-year-old child.
Area media outlets report that 21-year-old Aaron Young Jr. was convicted by a Beaufort County jury Wednesday. Young was found guilty of murder in the death of 8-year-old Khalil Singleton and the attempted killing of Tyrone Robinson in 2012.
The shooting occurred during an exchange of gunfire between Young and Robinson.
Robinson is serving a life sentence. He is thought to have fired the fatal shot. But charges against Young were brought on the legal theory of mutual combat, holding all parties in an exchange of gunfire responsible regardless of who fires a fatal shot.
Young's father, Aaron Young Sr., also faces trial on the same charges.
